Jonny Hayes sees Aberdeen FC secret weapon in Dante Polvara but pleads for patience on American hype train

Jonny Hayes reckons born-again midfielder Dante Polvara will be Aberdeen’s secret weapon this season.

The Dons were successful in their final pre-season game before this weekend’s kick-off when they won in London as Scots singer Lewis Capaldi took in the game at The Valley. Aberdeen were three up against the League One side before conceding two late goals and American midfielder Polvara caught the eye with a fine performance.

Polvara was loaned to US side Charleston Battery last season and the 23-year-old looked to face an uncertain future at Pittodrie. But with doubts remaining over the future of Ylber Ramadani who has caught the interest of Serie A side Lecce, Polvara could yet play a key role. And veteran winger Hayes has been impressed since his return. He said: “He’s come back sharper and is moving the ball a bit quicker in training.

“Dante has always plenty of ability, there’s no doubt about that. If you’re looking for the most complete player in that changing room it’s probably Dante Polvara.

“He has every tool, he’s a young kid and moved across here just after Covid. He has settled off the park but all these changes for a young player moving 3000 or 4000 miles away it’s going to be tough for him.

“It’s going to take time and he will not be an overnight success. But the way the manager wants to play I think will suit Dante’s game and he’ll get there eventually, week by week.

“The loan spell has been very beneficial for him. I’m not expecting him to go and win Player of the Year but I think he’s a long-term project and has a great future in the game.
