Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton warned of Ryder Cup snub as LIV Golf stars face new obstacle

Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton have been warned their chances of playing in the Ryder Cup could be at risk.

This comes ahead of a crucial meeting on Thursday, where former Ryder Cup-winning captain Paul McGinley says there are many hurdles for LIV Golf members who want to play in the tournament. McGinley and the other five members of the advisory board will discuss how to bridge the gap between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. Currently, players from LIV are not allowed to play in the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage in New York.

This wasn't an issue in 2023, as most of Europe's top players were mainly playing on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. However, the recent moves of Rahm and Hatton to LIV have made things more complicated for Luke Donald, the returning Team Europe captain. Right now, Rahm and Hatton could be left out of the Ryder Cup because of their involvement with LIV, which is funded by Saudi Arabia. This has resulted in fines and suspensions from the DP World Tour.

To be eligible for the competition, European players need to be active members of the Wentworth-based circuit, reports the Mirror. Players from both the PGA Tour and LIV Golf have asked for changes to the eligibility requirements so that Europe can bring its strongest team to the US. But McGinley told the Belfast Telegraph that finding a solution won't be easy.

"Under the current systems, LIV players are not going to be eligible," McGinley said. "So the rules will have to be changed if they are to be played. But there are a lot of hurdles to jump to get to the place where they're going to be eligible."
