Jon Jones' future: Former opponent questions lack of promotion for heavyweight debut

Jon Jones’ former rival Chael Sonnen has questioned the light heavyweight GOAT’s lack of promotion for the next chapter of his career.

One thing that a whole lot of fans and pundits are eager to see is the return of Jon Jones.

It’s been almost three years since we saw him compete inside the Octagon, back at UFC 247, when he edged past Dominick Reyes via decision to successfully retain the 205-pound title.

Alas, it seems his days at that weight class are almost certainly over, with all signs pointing towards him finally shifting up to heavyweight.

There’s been a lot of teasing and hinting at a comeback with Jones himself suggesting earlier this year that UFC 282 would serve as his return date. Unfortunately, as of this writing, that isn’t on the cards.

The match-up that everyone wants to see is ‘Bones’ vs Stipe Miocic, the man who is often considered to be the greatest UFC heavyweight of all time. It’s a legitimate test against someone who has beaten some of the very best to ever do it, and if Jones is able to win decisively, he’d set himself up for a blockbuster meeting with Francis Ngannou for the belt.

Chael Sonnen, who has had his fair share of things to say about Jon over the years, recently commented on his foe’s inability to build a fresh fight.

"Jon Jones is in a situation where there is a very big match for him but only one. What do you do after that one? In two years he went and did some pull-ups and drank some protein powder.

“He hasn't built a single fight for himself. Here we are, two years later and 40 pounds bigger, stuck in the same exact situation, which says there's nobody that you want to see fight Jon Jones."
