Johnny Kenny 'to earn' big Celtic chance as Shamrock Rovers heroics turns Brendan Rodgers' head
Johnny Kenny is set for his big chance at Celtic after sparkling on loan at Shamrock Rovers.
The youngster has had to bide his time since a permanent move to Parkhead with chances yet to land at the feet of the Republic of Ireland Under-21 star. But Brendan Rodgers wants a third striker in his ranks to provide back-up to Kyogo and Adam Idah and the Daily Mail report that his impressive audition that has left Shamrock on the brink of the Europa Conference League play-off round will earn him that shot.
Rodgers had earmarked that third option role in the summer for Rocco Vata before his decision to depart Parkhead for a move south of the border with Watford. Daizen Maeda has been used as an alternative when required in that role but is preferred out wide with his lightning pace and work rate a real asset to the champions.
Now, Kenny is ready to return to his parent club with three European goals behind him as part of a blistering season in front of goal. He's found the net against Rapid Vienna, The New Saints and TNS on the European stage with two other outings to come against Borac and high-flying EPL big-hitters Chelsea before he returns to Scotland.
That leaves them sitting above Scottish Premiership outfit Hearts, La Liga's Real Betis and Green giants Panathinaikos in their bid to create further club history by reaching the next stage with one big foot in the door to reach the knockout rounds.
