Johnnie Jackson rages at Charlton Athletic's players after Sheffield Wednesday defeat

Charlton Athletic manager Johnnie Jackson was unhappy with side's display in their 2-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.

First half goals from George Byers and Callum Paterson consigned the Addicks to a fifth consecutive loss.

The result means the Addicks have now gone seven games without a clean sheet – conceding at least twice in each of their last six.

Jackson, who described the Hillsborough pitch as "difficult", told CharltonTV: “I’m disappointed. It was too comfortable a day for Sheffield Wednesday, obviously they got ahead early and that’s exactly what we wanted to avoid.

"We wanted to start well and stay hard to beat. They had a number of corners and set-pieces in the opening moments and, ultimately, we didn’t defend those and we then found ourselves behind. It was completely against what the plan was."

Charlton, lying 16th in the table, only registered one shot on target in the Hillsborough clash.

“I don’t think we’ve done nearly enough to get back into the game," he said. "I don’t think we’ve played the conditions smartly at all.

"It’s a difficult pitch and you have to try and make the other team defend a lot more - whether that’s just balls down the side, being a bit cuter with trying to gain a bit of territory and forcing them to defend. That’s what they did to us. We didn’t do it well enough, we didn’t do it smartly enough and we got what we deserved.”

On their defending for Byers' fifth minute opener, Jackson said: "A terrible start. Something that we spoke about – they try and start quick and get you turned and put pressure on you. We wanted to do that to them but we weren’t able to. Found ourselves defending from the first seconds.

“Defending set-play situations, which they’re strong in. It’s a nightmare
