Johnnie Jackson reveals the Charlton Athletic player who is “difficult” to leave out the side

Johnnie Jackson was delighted after his side sealed a 1-0 win over Gillingham and one player that he singled out for praise was goalscorer Alex Gilbey, as he told the club’s official Twitter page that he can produce the goods ‘every single week’ for the Addicks.

The League One club have struggled at times this season and after a slow start that saw them fighting off relegation, Johnnie Jackson has come in and steadied the ship slightly. Whilst they have still been in the lower reaches of the division recently, he was happy to pick up another three points last night.

It leaves the club in 16th and was their first win since February – so they would have been relieved to finally get back to winning ways.

The clash was decided in the first half, with Gilbey getting the only goal of the game in the 40th minute. After the strike, his boss was quick to heap the praise on the 27-year-old for his showing in the centre of the field.

It was his second goal of the season but it wasn’t the only way in which he contributed against the Gills.

The player also had more dribbles than anyone else involved in the game and was the most fouled player, as Neil Harris’ side struggled to stop him.

With 29 matches this season in the league, he has also been one of the club’s most reliable players during the campaign – and after the match-winning goal, Jackson was quick to praise the midfielder via the club’s official Twitter account.

Speaking after the game, he said:”Delighted for Gilbs [Alex Gilbey], it’s difficult for me to leave him out because I’ve got a good relationship with him.

“For me, he is a player that should be doing what he did tonight every single week. He’s a top top player at this level and he needs to add the goals to his game.
