John Beaton goes from Rangers controversy to Celtic gig as Kevin Clancy makes Dundee trip
Rangers row ref John Beaton will take charge of Celtic’s clash with St Mirren at Parkhead while Kevin Clancy has been handed the Ibrox side’s trip to Dens Park in a full Scottish Premiership midweek card.
Beaton and VAR Alan Muir as well as his Clydesdale House assistant Andrew McWilliam came in for fierce criticism following an action-packed clash in Govan with the Light Blues running out 2-1 winners following two last-gasp goals, including a penalty from James Tavernier – the Rangers captain’s second spot kick of the afternoon after an earlier miss from 12 yards.
Jambos gaffer Steven Naismith was seething over the call to award the penalty for a shirt pull by Peter Haring on Connor Goldson, claiming there had been an earlier foul which was missed. Hearts fans have also flooded social media in a rage over Beaton penalising Kenneth Vargas for obstruction after he went down under a push from Rangers substitute Ross McCausland. And in the latest round of Scottish Football Association appointments, Beaton will be thrust straight back into the spotlight as he is the man in the middle for the champions home clash with St Mirren with Nick Walsh the VAR man.
Rangers, who closed the gap on the leaders to five points after the Hoops were held at Easter Road on Saturday, travel to Dundee with Clancy in charge of that one and Gavin Duncan on VAR.
