Jim Carrey fans get 'chills' over star's role in film adaptation of iconic game

A trailer has finally dropped for the film that has brought Jim Carrey out of retirement - and fans are delighted.

Carrey, a comedy legend known for his roles in The Mask, Liar Liar, Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura, and The Grinch, will return this Christmas as Dr Robotnik in the third live-action Sonic the Hedgehog film. This follows the huge success of 2022's Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which raked in a global total of $405 million at the box office.

In the latest film, Carrey will also portray Robotnik's grandfather Gerald, who is humorously introduced in all his "saggy flesh" at the end of the trailer.

Back in 2022, Carey said Sonic the Hedgehog 2 would be his last. He told Hollywood Access at the time: "If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break."

Fans of the comedian expressed their excitement in the YouTube comments section over his reprisal of the Sega video game villain. "I love how Jim Carrey said he's retired unless 'a script of gold comes to him'. This must be a script of gold" and "Jim Carrey playing two roles at once is going to be epic," were among the reactions to the trailer, reports the Mirror.

One viewer confessed that the footage gave them "absolute chills", while another commented: "Jim Carrey ALSO playing Gerald Robotnik is an idea I've had in the back of my head since the movie got announced. So glad they are actually doing it!".
