Jeremie Frimpong in 'great' Liverpool transfer namecheck as Celtic cash in patience could be rewarded

Celtic could be set to rake in millions next summer should wing-back Jeremie Frimpong decide to leave high-flying Bayer Leverkusen.

Dutch international Frimpong is having an excellent season with Xabi Alonso's side, who command an eight point lead over rivals Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga with 12 games remaining. The 23-year-old, who joined Leverkusen from Celtic in January 2021 for around £11.5million, has scored seven goals and set up another seven for his teammates, mirroring the success of Alejandro Grimaldo on the other side of the pitch. Frimpong has netted in each of his last two games, including the final goal in a 3-0 rout against Bayern earlier this month.

The pacey wing-back's performances haven't gone unnoticed in England, with several Premier League clubs reportedly interested in signing him at the end of the 2023/24 season. Premiership champions Celtic will be keeping a keen eye on proceedings, having inserted a 30 per cent sell-on clause into the deal that took him to Germany just over three years ago.

Manchester United have been keeping tabs on Frimpong and his teammate Edmond Tapsoba, even holding talks with their agents last year. However, Frimpong has now suggested that he might prefer a move to Liverpool, where he could potentially join forces with Alonso.

In a chat with Soccer News via Ziggo Sport, he said: "Liverpool? Great club, with history. That would be great. Who knows what the future will bring."

His current boss Alonso might find himself at Anfield this summer as Liverpool line up Jurgen Klopp's replacement. Klopp, who won't have a say in his successor, recently said that the Leverkusen coach is the top choice for the job.
