Jasper Philipsen bags dramatic Tour de France stage success in Bayonne

Jasper Philipsen sprinted to victory on stage three of the Tour de France as Adam Yates retained the yellow jersey in Bayonne.

Philipsen had the power to hold off Phil Bauhaus and Caleb Ewan on a slight uphill to the line as Mark Cavendish, seeking a record-breaking 35th career Tour stage victory, came home in sixth place.

Wout van Aert, second on Sunday's stage in San Sebastian, had tried to challenge Philipsen in the finale but found himself squeezed against the barriers and sat up at the line.

There had been a huge fight for position in the final 30 kilometres of the 193km stage from Amorebieta-Extano, but the best laid plans of most lead out trains were ripped apart as the peloton tackled several roundabouts and a sharp hairpin in the final six kilometres.

With the washing machine in full effect, Mathieu van der Poel guided Alpecin-Deceuninck team-mate Philipsen into the perfect place, darting straight for the line as a slight kink in the barriers on a bend did for Van Aert.

The sprint finish meant there were no major changes in the general classification, with Adam Yates remaining six seconds ahead of UAE Emirates team-mate Tadej Pogacar and twin brother Simon Yates of Jayco-Alula.

But after Philipsen had been declared the winner, there was a question mark over the result for several minutes after the finish.

Philipsen came to the podium to do his winner's interview but was then asked to wait as the footage was reviewed by the race jury to check if he had impeded Van
