Tadej Pogacar celebrated his fourth Tour de France title in Paris but was denied what would have been a stunning final stage victory as Wout van Aert rode away on the wet cobbles of Montmartre to win on the Champs-Elysees.
PARIS, France: Tadej Pogacar said he was looking forward to taking some time off and enjoying the “small things” in life after making Tour de France history on Sunday. Pogacar joined an elite club of riders to have won the sport’s greatest race five times: Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain. But he was not interested in thinking about joining such lofty company. “Right now I just want to enjoy the moment of winning the Tour,” he said. “If it’s the fifth or the first, it doesn’t matter — it’s unbelievable to wear the yellow jersey and to cross the line in Paris winning it. “I will just enjoy this moment, not thinking about any history, not thinking about (joining any club). “I just want to live this moment, come back home, relax, enjoy the small things of life. “I’m really happy and proud to win a fifth Tour.

Thousands of orange-clad, booze-fueled cycling enthusiasts and young revellers flock to corner seven of Alpe d’Huez every time the Tour de France climbs the iconic mountain. And they create a unique, noisy and hectic atmosphere — even by Tour de France mountain pass standards. This year, the Tour will head up the 21 Alpe d’Huez hairpins on Friday — and some of the Dutch fans rocking to Europop tunes will have already been there for days by the time the peloton passes. More Dutch riders have won a Tour de France stage on Alpe d’Huez than any other nationality, including the host country. For Dutch riders in the Tour, this will be a poignant moment. “It’s a super special mountain, of course, Dutch Mountain and the famous corner seven,” said Dutch rider Thymen Arensman before the Tour began. Arensman has been on Dutch Corner before — and not just for training rides. “I have super special memories of this climb because when I was a little kid, like so many other Dutch people, I went there with my parents on holiday,” said the 26-year-old Netcompany Ineos rider, who won two Tour stages last year. “I was really keen and eager as a little child to do this climb also as fast as possible. “So (I have) really good memories there from my childhood.” Arensman and his Netcompany team-mates trained on the Alpe d’Huez hairpins before the Tour began. “We did the climb a few times, but the climb is still just as hard as I remember as a little kid,” he added. “The famous corner seven will be amazing.” Just getting to that point of the race this year will have been no mean feat, given how hard the 113th edition of the Grande Boucle has been. LE LIORAN, France: Four-time champion Tadej Pogačar dealt his rivals another crushing blow by winning the 10th stage of the Tour de France on Tuesday to extend his already commanding overall lead. “You never know how long it lasts,” said Pogačar, who is on course to equal the record for Tour wins. Only Belgian Eddy Merckx, Spaniard Miguel Indurain and Frenchmen Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault have five Tour victories to their names. “We just need to be grateful for this moment to be riding in the biggest race of the world,” the 27-year-old Pogačar said. Pogačar, who had already sapped his rivals’ morale with victory on the iconic Col du Tourmalet on Thursday, again stamped his authority with a break just over 900 meters from the summit of the Col de Pertus, the penultimate climb on Tuesday’s hilly stage. Pogačar’s main challenger Jonas Vingegaard couldn’t follow and Pogačar quickly made ground on Richard Carapaz before powering past him 200 meters before the summit.
BERGERAC, France: Sunday’s stage nine of the Tour de France will be shortened by 30 km (18.64 miles) due to heat risks, race organizers said on Saturday, though it will retain its originally planned start and finish points. The stage from Malemort to Ussel, which was originally scheduled for 185.5 km, will now follow a 155.5 km route, the organizers said in a statement. “Meteo-France has placed the department of Correze on red alert due to an exceptionally intense heatwave,” the statement said. “In light of this ... the race will divert from the original route in the neutral zone, taking the D921 and heading from Brive-la-Gaillarde straight to Lanteuil, 147.8 km from the finish in Ussel.” Western Europe experienced its warmest June on record, leading to a surge in heat-related deaths.
GAVARNIE-GÈDRE, France: Reigning champion Tadej Pogacar stamped his authority on the Tour de France on Thursday, winning the mountainous sixth stage and reclaiming the race leader’s yellow jersey from Torstein Traeen, who was forced out of the race with concussion. Pogacar now leads by 2min 42sec from his main rival Jonas Vingegaard, who finished second on the 186km Pyrenean stage from Pau to Gavarnie-Gedre to move up to second overall. “Today I woke up at seven in the morning already and my mind was going crazy so I was really really excited for today,” said Pogacar, who broke the record for the fastest time up the Tourmalet on the way to his 23rd Tour stage victory. “All the guys (his team-mates) were really hyped so I knew it would be a good day. “We just committed, we were going like nothing to lose.
BARCELONA: Jonas Vingegaard took an early lead in his quest for a third Tour de France title as the Visma-Lease a Bike rider recorded the fastest time in stage one — a 19.6-km team time trial in Barcelona — with a finish in 21 minutes and 47 seconds on Saturday. Italian Filippo Ganna (Netcompany-Ineos) finished eight seconds slower, while defending champion Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) was third, coming in 12 seconds behind Denmark’s Vingegaard, who claimed the yellow jersey for the first time since 2023.
BARCELONA: Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar said on Thursday that his rivalry with Jonas Vingegaard is pushing both riders “to new heights.” The pair have won the last six editions of the Tour de France between them, and have finished first and second in each of the last five — something which had never happened before. Slovenian Pogacar has four Tour wins to Vingegaard’s two but the Dane has won all three of cycling’s Grand Tours following his Giro d’Italia victory in May. World champion Pogacar has yet to win the Vuelta a Espana, where he finished third in his only appearance in 2019. And the 27-year-old insisted that the Tour is not going to be a straight fight between him and Vingegaard, 29, pointing to his own UEA Team Emirates team-mate Isaac del Toro as a potential challenger. “I don’t think that he’s the only one that can come close,” Pogacar said about Vingegaard. “I think that there are quite a few guys here that can aim for the victory, right next to me,” he added at Thursday’s pre-Tour press conference, indicating Mexican Del Toro. “But the competition between me and Jonas, of course, the last few years was spectacular. “And I think it will continue for a few more years, I hope. We will see. “I think we push each other to the new heights every year. So we will see how far we go this year.”
PARIS: Briton Oscar Onley, who finished fourth in the race last year, has been forced to pull out of next month’s Tour de France due to a shoulder injury, his team said on Thursday. Onley, who has had a season disrupted by injuries and illness, dislocated his shoulder in a crash during the Tour Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes earlier this month. He crashed over a safety barrier on a speedy descent and was saved from a fall down into a ravine when he was caught in the branches of a tree,. “Further medical investigations have confirmed a significant shoulder injury,” Netcompany Ineos said in a statement. “Unfortunately, this means Oscar will be unable to compete in this year’s Tour de France.” The 23-year-old managed to finish the sixth stage in Auvergne despite his crash, but rolled over the line almost half an hour after the stage winner. He pulled out of the race before the next stage. “I’m gutted not to be able to line up for the Tour de France this year,” said the Scot. “My focus is now on recovering and getting my shoulder in a good place, but I’m really motivated to try and make something out of this season.” He has been unable to finish in three of his five stage races this year. He finished fourth overall at the Tour of the Algarve in February but then had to pull out of Paris-Nice in March with illness.
