Jamie Murphy responds to' 'name and shame' demand following revelations over blocked Rangers transfer

Jamie Murphy has responded to calls from supporters to 'name and shame' the other Premiership club that nearly prevented his switch to Rangers from Brighton six years ago.

The winger had sparked fury among some sections of fans after claiming that another top-flight Scottish club had the transfer back in 2018 in doubt by informing the Seagulls that the Ibrox club could not stump up the cash to get a deal over the line. Several Gers fans have reacted angrily to the comments and have urged Murphy to publicly name the team who had got in touch with the English south-coast side.

But taking to X himself, Murphy has moved to pour cold water on the situation, writing: "Relax, nobody said it was your team…" On an appearance on the Open Goal podcast on Monday night, the two-time Scotland cap and former Motherwell youngster had revealed just how close the deal was to completely falling apart before he secured an initial loan move that was made permanent the following summer. He said: "It was a bit of a fiasco. I fly up on the Thursday and have the first part of the medical.

"The second part of the medical is the Friday so I do that and I’ve to go to Murray Park because they were flying out to Florida so it was trying to get it all done for then. It was a transfer, no loan so it gets to 2 o'clock and they needed to get some stuff done with Brighton, but they weren't really responding so we just had to sit for a bit. It gets to 5,6,7 o'clock and the Rangers boys have all met up now. They couldn't get a hold of them.

"My agent then got a hold of them and they said the deal's off. Let's just say another SPL team had phoned them and told them that Rangers couldn't afford it, they'd no money.
