Jamie Carragher tells Ruben Amorim 'don't pour petrol' on the Man Utd flames as he brands players a 'joke'

Jamie Carragher admits he was gobsmacked by Ruben Amorim's claim that he is currently managing the worst team in Manchester United's history and reckons that the Portuguese boss will be getting a stern telling off from the Old Trafford hierarchy.

The Red Devils 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton on Sunday has left them sitting 13th in the Premier League table, 12 points adrift of the European places and just 10 above the relegation zone. Former Sporting CP head coach Amorim has enjoyed some decent results since succeeding Erik ten Hag back in November including an away victory against Manchester City in the derby and a penalty shootout triumph away to Arsenal in the FA Cup, but they have been few and far between as United continue to drop further and further down the table.

Following Sunday's loss, the 39-year-old then gave the press pack at Old Trafford a field day when he stated that the current United team are the worst in the entirety of the club's 147-year history. Amorim has faced a huge backlash for his comments from fans and pundits alike and Liverpool legend Carragher has described the under-fire bosses' comments as the "most bizarre and ridiculous" thing he has ever heard a manager say.

Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of Chelsea's clash with Wolves, he said: "I don't know Manchester United's history as much as Gary Neville but I must say I think it was one of the most bizarre and ridiculous things I've heard a manager say. That is the type of comment a pundit or someone in my position would make, and he would have to defend that in some way.

"I don't know why he said that. He almost had a smirk on his face when he was saying it as well as if he almost knew the magnitude of his words.

"Manchester United lost a home
