Jamie Carragher shares worrying verdict on Phil Foden's development at Man City

Jamie Carragher believes Phil Foden is falling behind other young English talent because he can't get into the Manchester City team.

The Englishman made 32 Premier League appearances for City last year but found himself outside of Pep Guardiola's first-choice team. Foden didn't start the FA Cup final or the UEFA Champions League final.

The 24-year-old's versatility has been praised but it still seems as though Foden's best position is unclear. Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish played ahead of him out wide last year but the exits of Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan could help him earn more game time.

Carragher believes Foden has stagnated for club and country and is behind Jude Bellingham as England's most exciting talent. He is concerned and wants Foden to get more important minutes this upcoming season.

Speaking on The Overlap, Carragher said: "Phil Foden is not young anymore. Three or four years ago, we were saying he was going to be the best English player.

"It almost feels like Jude Bellingham has become that player, where he's the one we build this England team around. Foden can't quite get in the England team and can't get in the Manchester City team.

"Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez have left, and they're playing in the Community Shield a week before the season begins, and he still can't get in the starting eleven.

"We all know how good he is – what is it that's stopping him? Pep played Alvaréz behind Haaland – that's a position where Foden could play, but he still doesn't play him."
