Jamie Carragher explains the problem with Andre Onana at Manchester United

Jamie Carragher believes an under-18 goalkeeper would never play for Manchester United's first-team again if he made the same mistakes as Andre Onana on Wednesday - saying the stopper is given 'too much to do'.

Onana endured a disastrous night in Istanbul as United drew 3-3 in their penultimate Champions League group stage game against Galatasaray. The 27-year-old twice let weak free-kicks from Hakim Ziyech beat him, the second of which he palmed into his own net.

United were 2-0 and 3-1 up at different points in Turkey but Onana's errors allowed Galatasaray back into the game and Muhammed Aktürkoğlu levelled the score with 19 minutes remaining. The point leaves Erik ten Hag's side bottom of Group A with one game remaining, their hopes of progression handing by a thread.

"For a team hunting the biggest trophies, the art of being a world class keeper is to do the little you are required to do brilliantly well," Carragher wrote in his column for the Telegraph. "Unfortunately for Onana, at the start of his United career he has been responsible for turning victories into draws, and draws into defeats.

"Unlike in the great United teams of the past, he has too much to do and the more he has to deal with the more likely it is that another mistake is in the post. United’s perilous Champions League predicament is a direct consequence of his errors.

"Onana cost the team home and away against Galatasaray and was poor against Bayern Munich in the opening group game. Yes, he made a last minute penalty save against Copenhagen at Old Trafford, but the numerous minuses far outweigh that one positive.
