James Roby's last dance - inside the mind of St Helens' retiring stalwart

St Helens captain James Roby is dreaming of a historic last hurrah in 2022 – a season that is almost certain to be his last before he hangs up his boots.

The legendary hooker and one-club man made his debut in 2004 and has enjoyed a glittering career at his hometown club.

He has helped Saints to the Super League in each of the past three seasons and this year they will bid to claim an unprecedented fourth straight Grand Final win.

Roby turned 36 in November but, having after an outstanding 2021 campaign, he signed a one-year deal and it is widely accepted that this will be his final season.

Roby told Rugby League Live: “That’s not 100% set in stone because if I’m feeling good physically then maybe Saints might want to keep me for another year, perhaps as back-up to somebody else.

“But I’m gearing up for this season being my last and preparing for life after being a professional rugby league player.

“I’ve been very lucky and had a very privileged career by being part of some fantastic teams and outstanding coaches, winning trophies along the way.

“I’m happy and content and I feel like the time might be right to finish.

“I’m in two minds about what I’ll do when I retire.

“Part of me would love to stay involved in the game and another part of me would like a fresh challenge, maybe away from sport.

“I got my masters degree in sports directorship last year, so I’ve got a year to put a few feelers out.”

Bowing out as a winner at Old Trafford would be the fairytale farewell for a man who has given so much to the St Helens cause down the years.

Roby, who retired from international duty last September, admitted: “We’re aware of the prize that’s at stake and I’d be lieing if I said that wasn’t the aim.
