James Milner uploaded his running stats in pre-season last year - they were ridiculous

James Milner is reportedly set to sign a new one year contract at Liverpool.

The 36-year-old’s current deal expires this summer but numerous reports suggest he will sign a new one-year contract at Anfield.

It’s believed Milner turned down proposals from two Premier League clubs and one MLS side and confirmation regarding his new deal is set to be announced later this week.

He may be in the twilight of his career but Milner still made 24 Premier League appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side. He made a further eight appearances in the Champions League, while playing seven times in the successful FA Cup and Carabao Cup campaigns.

He’s not going to be a regular starter for Liverpool in the 2022/23 season but Klopp knows the importance of the experienced midfielder.

Back in February, the Liverpool boss said: “The level [Milner] is at, physically, technically and in terms of personal desire and hunger for more, means he should play on for as long as that lasts. I hope it will be here and that is what I have told those at the club who take on these tasks.”

Despite his age, Milner offers incredible work rate and energy. It’s no surprise to see him substituted on in the latter stages of matches in an attempt to see out the match.

This season will be his 21st in the professional game but you just know that he’ll be leading the way in pre-season at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre in Kirkby.

That was certainly the case last year.

Milner, who was 35 last summer, posted his running stats during pre-season – and they were quite incredible for someone of his age.

The bottom line is he managed more than 8.5km in 34 minutes! That is quite ridiculous.

Milner released his running stats on social media with the caption: Pre season number 20
