James Maddison fires second Roy Keane dig as Tottenham goal hero 'silences' Man Utd critic

James Maddison has launched a second not-so-subtle dig at Roy Keane after leaving the Manchester United legend with egg on his face.

Maddison marked a sensational return from injury on Sunday as the ex-Leicester City playmaker netted the winner against crisis-hit United to lift Spurs to 12th in the table. The 28-year-old hadn't featured in almost four weeks after suffering a calf strain in a Europa League win over Hoffenheim - adding to luckless boss Ange Postecoglou's wretched injury list.

But the playmaker proved his worth by scoring the only goal of the game on 13 minutes when he pounced on a rebound after Andre Onana parried Lucas Bergvall's shot. His trademark darts celebration was especially pointed too, as he celebrated his goal by putting his finger to his mouth to signal shush - sending a clear message to critic Keane.

The straight-talking Irishman aimed a brutal swipe at Maddison during the week by claiming the creative midfielder wouldn't be a difference-maker for the struggling North London club when he returned from injury. Keane told the Stick to Football podcast: "We saw Maddison at Tamworth, he was taken off. Tamworth are non-league. People say Maddison’s the man. When is he going to step up to the plate? He got relegated with Leicester and he’ll get relegated with Spurs.

"Maddison isn’t bad when he’s not at the darts, but let me tell you, if you think he’s going to come back and get Spurs into the top six, you’re in cuckoo land. He’s good, he’s a talented player. But if you’re a player in the Spurs dressing room and Maddison’s back in the squad, you wouldn’t be looking and going 'oh Jesus – he’s back today. We’re going to be fine'."
