Jadon Sancho's Manchester United career could be nearing its end as speculation mounts that he could join rivals Chelsea – with Raheem Sterling potentially heading in the opposite direction.

The former Manchester City youth player's switch to Borussia Dortmund saw him attract attention from Europe's top clubs after a series of impressive performances in Germany. United ultimately secured the winger's services, bringing him to Old Trafford for £73million in July 2021, and Sancho's high-profile transfer appeared to be the next significant step in his career.

However, since then, Sancho's stint at United has been marred by poor form, injury and a very public disagreement with United manager Erik ten Hag. So, as Chelsea and United reportedly negotiate one of the summer's biggest deals, we examine just what went wrong for Sancho at United.

One of the main reasons behind Sancho's impending departure from United is his strained relationship with Ten Hag. Despite early promise between the two, with Sancho shining in the Dutchman's first pre-season at the club, Sancho's form began to wane. And an appearance against Chelsea in October 2022 turned out to be his last in a United shirt for three months.

Reports suggest that Ten Hag was worried about Sancho's form and, following his exclusion from England's 2022 World Cup squad, the winger was sent to train in the Netherlands while his team-mates enjoyed a training camp in Spain. During this period, Ten Hag stated that Sancho needed to address "a combination of physical but also mental"
