Jackman: Tadhg Beirne should be next to lead Munster

Tadhg Beirne is the outstanding candidate to take over from Peter O'Mahony as Munster captain, according to RTÉ rugby analyst Bernard Jackman.

O'Mahony left big boots to fill when he handed in his notice as skipper a couple of weeks ago, but Jackman believes the experienced lock would be suited to the role.

When asked his preference for the next Munster on-field general on RTÉ Radio One's Sunday Sport, former Ireland international Jackman was unequivocal.

"Tadhg Beirne," he said. "He's a quiet guy but the way he plays, the level of experience he has in the game, the way he’s gone to Munster and bought into it and been a really consistent performer.

"He’s always going to be in the team, first of all. I’ve heard people say give it to Jack Crowley and I can see the value of that, you'd have someone there for the next seven, right, nine years and I think the halfbacks are doing a cracking job in their own right.

"I’d give it to Beirne – and maybe I’m biased here – but I always think a Munster captain should be a forward.

"Beirne is all action."

Munster saw off Glasgow Warriors in URC action on Friday night with Beirne in the engine room.

"Munster just look comfortable in how they want to play. They were ruthless in exposing Glasgow."
