Jack Doohan emerges as outside bet for Alpine seat in 2023

Jack Doohan put in an impressive performance over the Formula 2 weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix and could be an outside bet for the vacant Alpine seat.

The young Aussie is currently fourth in the standings in F1’s feeder series having won two sprint races this year and now a feature race, which came at Spa on Sunday.

Indeed, he has shown good form of late in F2 and is clearly a driver carrying a lot of confidence at the moment, sparking rumours to suggest he might be an outside bet for Alpine for 2023.

The French/British team currently have only Esteban Ocon definitely lined up for them for next year, with them awaiting the verdict from the FIA’s Contract Dispute Board over Oscar Piastri’s situation.

If the CRB rule that Alpine’s contract takes precedence over McLaren’s reported offer, then we could well see Piastri drive for them in 2023 after all but, if that does not happen or if there are other issues, Alpine need to find themselves a driver.

Daniel Ricciardo, Mick Schumacher and Pierre Gasly have all been linked of late and seem more likely options than Doohan given their experience and talent but, if they opt against those three, then perhaps Doohan will get his big chance earlier than he might have expected.
