Iulian Boiko wins thriller to keep hopes alive at snooker Q School with comeback victory over Stuart Carrington

Ukraine snooker hero Iulian Boiko kept alive his hopes of regaining his professional World Snooker Tour card with a 4-3 late-night win over Stuart Carrington in Leicester. The talented 17-year-old trailed Carrington 3-1, but reeled off the final three frames against the two-time ranking event winner just before midnight to progress to the last 16 on Wednesday and a meeting with Jamie O’Neill, who edged out Joshua Thomond 4-3.

Ad Boiko also went the distance in a 4-3 win over Oliver Sykes in the second round before setting up his clash with Carrington courtesy of a 4-2 success against Liam Davies earlier on Tuesday. Fellow teenager Liam Pullen produced a rousing comeback from 3-0 behind against former Crucible qualifier Craig Steadman to complete a 4-3 triumph. Steadman rolled in breaks of 106 and 60, but Pullen – who lost 5-1 to Halifax potting prodigy Stan Moody in the world junior final earlier this year – responded with 70 and 69 before finishing with a classy 109 to secure a meeting with Sydney Wilson in the last 16.

Alexander Ursenbacher and Alfie Burden will meet in the penultimate qualifying round after both men enjoyed solid wins in the last 32. Ursenbacher dismissed Chris Totten 4-1 with his sparkling 136 the highest break of the event so far as recent world seniors finalist Burden ran out a 4-2 victor against local favourite Louis Heathcote.
