ITV The Chase features unpopular view about part of Manchester

Manchester fans of ITV's The Chase were left howling after tonight's (Friday) programme as a contestant failed to answer a rudimentary question about our city correctly. The error was further compounded when the chaser aired a pretty unpopular view about part of Manchester with his answer.

Host Bradley Walsh posed the following question to Eva, 18, a modern foreign languages student from Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire in the south east of England: "Which English city has a recently gentrified area called The Northern Quarter?"

The options for Eva - and the chaser Darragh Ennis AKA The Menace - to choose from were Birmingham, Sheffield and Manchester.

Eva selected Birmingham, telling Bradley: "I've briefly heard about the Northern Quarter, I couldn't quite remember what city exactly. I thought it was Midlands, but I don't know."

When 'Manchester' was lit up green and Eva got the question wrong, Bradley said: "I don't get the question."

He asked The Menace for his answer, but the Irishman went a little too far and claimed that the Northern Quarter is an attempt to 'posh up' the northern area of Manchester.

Darragh said: "Yeah, I was up there a couple of months ago and they've tried to 'posh up' the northern bit of the city and call it the Northern Quarter."

Bradley, who famously trod the fictional cobbles of Coronation Street as Danny Baldwin for a time, said: "Back in the day when I was there back in 2004 they were doing that anyway. It's not very recent, I have to say."

Darragh concurred, adding: "I think it's in the last 20 years."
