“It’s integral to keep him” – Sunderland fan pundit urges club to seal new deal for 29-year-old

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Bailey Wright has endured a very up and down season at Sunderland, falling in and out of favour multiple times under Lee Johnson before taking on a more integral role since Alex Neil’s arrival.

Wright was playing second fiddle to the likes of Callum Doyle and Tom Flanagan for the first half of the season, but with Neil leaning on experience at the business end of the season, the Australian has returned to the heart of defence.

The 29-year-old was on board as the club crashed out of the play-offs last season and will face intense competition for places to keep his spot in the side, but right now he is a crucial cog in the Black Cats’ League One promotion bid.

FLW’s Sunderland fan pundit Jack Austwicke delivered his verdict on whether the Aussie should be delivered a new contract.

Speaking to Football League World, Austwicke said: “Bailey Wright in my opinion is our best centre half, so, to keep him on a new deal would be something I’d be up for.

“I think he’s a brilliant centre half, he’s physical, he’s big, he doesn’t let anyone beat him too easily, he’s probably my favourite centre half at Sunderland.

“100% I’d offer him a new contract, it’s integral to keep him, he could definitely play at Championship level.”
