"Is in Glasgow...": Jordan Campbell drops Rangers transfer update that'll excite fans - opinion

The Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell has revealed that Rangers transfer target Mateusz Zukowski is “in Glasgow” to complete his move to Ibrox.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “Lechia Gdańsk right-back Mateusz Zukowski is in Glasgow to complete a move to Rangers. The 20yo has made 60 appearances for the club and is a Polish U21 international. Contract up at the end of the season but will come in to provide cover for Tavernier.”

Given that they’ve picked up just the one win in their past three Scottish Premiership games – including the costly and heart-breaking draw against Ross County at the weekend – it’s no surprise that Van Bronckhorst feels that his squad needs strengthening before the end of the transfer window.

The man who replaced Steven Gerrard in the Ibrox dugout mid-way through the season will know full well that arch-rivals Celtic are beginning to gather a bit of steam themselves, boosted in their prospects of wrestling away the title with a number of new signings this month.

For the Gers to keep pace, and stay ahead of the pack, they will need to make some late moves in the transfer market, and the arrival of Zukowski, will certainly help that.

The right-back is an exciting addition given his age, and will surely push James Tavernier for that first-team right-back spot, keeping him on his toes and offering some much-needed competition.

The Poland U21 international has shown himself to be a similar kind of full-back to Tavernier, someone who appears to do his best work going forward, having picked up two goals and one assist in 18 league games – that’s not to mention the fact that for Lechia’s U19s, he scored five goals in just 19 appearances.
