Irish-qualified Piers O'Connor joins Connacht from Bristol

Connacht have confirmed the signing of Irish-qualified utility back Piers O'Connor from Bristol Bears.

The 28-year-old joins after six years with the Bristol Bears where he amassed 131 appearances, picking up a Challenge Cup winners medal in 2020.

Primarily an outside centre, O’Conor can also play at full-back or on either wing and will give Pete Wilkins further options in the backline.

Prior to joining Bristol, O’Connor had spells at Wasps and Ealing Trailfinders.

An Ireland U19 international, he featured 10 times for England U20s in 2015.

O’Connor is Irish-qualified through his grandfather, with roots in Roscommon as well as Dublin.

Having picked up a player of the match award against Connacht during the 2020/21 season, he’s looking forward to returning to Galway.

"My first experience of Dexcom Stadium was during Covid when no fans were allowed in, but after coming back in January I was blown away by their passion and the deep connection they seem to have with the squad," he said.

"I can’t wait to represent them and the wider province from next season. I know there are exciting plans for the stadium as well, so I’m looking forward to seeing that come to life too."
