Ireland no match for South Africa in first ODI

South Africa Women cruised to victory in their first ODI against Ireland, beating the hosts by nine wickets in Dublin.

Shabnim Ismail and captain Sune Luus took three wickets each as Ireland tumbled to 69 all out in just under 28 overs before a partnership from Andrie Steyn and Lara Goodall ensured South Africa went 1-0 up in the ODI series.

The hosts were reduced to four for three inside the opening seven overs as Ismail and Ayabonga Khaka took a flurry of quick wickets that saw Ireland captain Gaby Lewis and Rachel Delaney both out for a duck.

Shauna Kavanagh and Sophie MacMahon put some runs on the board but Kavanagh was out to Raisibe Ntozakhe before Luus struck twice in the 21st over, taking the wickets of MacMahon and Sarah Forbes.

Georgina Dempsey hit three successive boundaries towards the end of the innings but ran out of partners to finish as Ireland's top scorer with 19 runs.

Despite losing Laura Wolvaardt early in their innings thanks to Dempsey, South Africa breezed to victory in just 16 overs with Steyn (21) and Goodall (32) securing the win.
