Cricket star Issy Wong compares herself to former Liverpool star
England star Issy Wong has described herself as the “Divock Origi of women’s cricket” after taking two late wickets on day three against South Africa.
The 20-year-old was initially a reserve for England’s Test squad, but found herself in the team after Emily Arlott failed to recover from COVID-19 in time.
She has seized the opportunity with both hands, marking her Test debut earlier this week by taking a wicket during South Africa’s first innings.
Wong added two more wicket maidens yesterday, removing Lara Goodall and Laura Wolvaardt to leave South Africa 55-3 in their second innings, 78 behind going into the final day.
When asked if she was a “big-game player”, Wong likened herself to Origi, who had made a habit of scoring crucial goals while playing for Liverpool.
His most notable was during the Champions League semi-final in 2019, when he scored Liverpool’s fourth goal as they overcame a 3-0 first-leg deficit against Barcelona.
