Iraqi FM Fuad Hussein: US-Iran prisoner swap 'will lead to less tension'

Following Monday's drone attack in the semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan, the Iraqi government has accused Turkey of being responsible for the strike, which caused the death of at least three members of an anti-terrorist unit. Hussein condemned the attack as "not acceptable" and "a violation of the sovereignty of the country". He added that he was planning to meet his Turkish counterpart in New York to discuss the matter.

September 19 was also the deadline for a security agreement between Iran and Iraq on the disarmament of terrorist groups near the border. Hussein said the Iraqi side was "committed" to the agreement and had "implemented" it.

Reacting to this week's prisoner swap between Iran and the United States, Hussein said the deal would "lead to less tension between Tehran and Washington."

Asked about relations between the Kurdistan regional government and the federal government in Bagdad, he said "there were some damages" but that now "it has been repaired".
