Investigation launched after tragic 'unexplained' death following vehicle blaze in Altrincham

An investigation has been launched after a person died in currently 'unexplained' circumstances after a vehicle blaze in Altrincham on Thursday afternoon (October 12).

Crews were initially called out to the incident at the end of Atlantic Street, beside the Trans Pennine trail car park to reports of a vehicle fire at around 3pm.

Police and paramedics raced to the scene shortly after to reports of an 'unexplained death'. It was later confirmed that a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

A cordon was put in place along Atlantic Street and adjoining Seamon's Road, in the Broadheath area amid investigations. Police vehicles and incident response units were called to the scene. Among the road closures, a footpath was also taped off.

Greater Manchester Police say that the enquiries are in their 'early stages' and that officers are 'keeping an open mind' about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Witnesses reported seeing seven police cars and two ambulances at the scene on Thursday afternoon as others said there were 'plumes of smoke' overhead.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Shortly before 3.30pm today (Thursday 12 October), police were called to Atlantic Street in Altrincham by GMFRS to reports of an unexplained death.

"Emergency services attended and a person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation is in its early stages and officers are keeping an open mind about the circumstances whilst enquiries continue."
