Inside the beautiful Manchester café serving up 'world famous' Malaysian buns

There's something quite mesmerising about watching bakers at work. Whether it's the tactile dusting of flour on countertops, assured kneading of dough until it becomes elastic and pliable, or the careful piping of icing onto freshly cooked buns, it's a sight to behold.

Here in Manchester, we're fortunate to have a number of bakeries and cafes where you can watch your sweet treats assembled and rise up, with many boasting open kitchens and glass partitions offering a front-row seat on all the baking action. From Pollen and Half Dozen Other to Gooey and Yellowhamer, we're spoilt for choice.

And now the Northern Quarter is welcoming another into the fold in the form of PappaRoti, a cafe chain that serves a variety of teas and coffees from around the globe, as well as it's 'world-famous' Malaysian coffee buns. Having opened its doors on Manchester's Church Street at the end of November, its quickly built up a reputation as a welcoming stop off for its speciality bakes and plethora of internationally inspired hot and cold beverages.

Over the past few years, we've seen a uptick in the variety of sweet treats available across the city. There's the totally moreish Kaya Toast from Chinatown spot Kaya, where a sweet spread made of coconut milk, egg, and Gula Melaka palm sugar is wedged between two slices of white bread; bubble waffles bringing the taste of Macau to Manchester served up at The Fing Fing Cloud cafe on Bloom Street in Manchester’s Gay Village; and the viral soufflé pancakes that are some of the fluffiest in town.
