Inside the abandoned Pontins holiday park where 'time has stood still'

Pontins Holiday Park in Southport closed its doors for the final time earlier this year. Britannia Hotels, the owner of the complex, announced the news on Wednesday, January 3, much to the dismay of holidaymakers and locals alike.

What used to be a holiday haven, the now shell of the site lies empty. The buildings that once housed holiday flats are still very much in situ, as well as the furniture and amenities within these flats - giving an almost eerie feeling of time gone by, reports Lancs Live.

Urban explorer Matt who lives in Rochdale, discovered what the place looks like now. Posting under the handle 'Exploring with Matt', the thrill seeker has been looking into buildings and land that have otherwise been forgotten.

He says navigating the hallways of old neglected hospitals are more his thing, but never passes off the opportunity to have a look in places nowhere else goes. On the Southport Pontins site, Matt said: "I'd saw that it closed online and I just happened to be in the area, so I checked it out along with my best mate No Limits Urbex, a great guy."

Talking to the Manchester Evening News previously, Matt said: "There are big misconceptions about what I do. I am not trying to encourage people to put themselves in danger or take any risks. I am doing that on behalf of people, to give people an insight into the amazing history of some of these buildings that they see every day and don't think about.

"Trespass is a civil matter, so it is between the explorer and the landowner. Often, these buildings have been left for so long it is almost impossible to find out who that land owner is or where they are.
