Inquest of Granada Reports journalist Teresa McMahon to be transferred to London after GMP claims

The aunt of a TV journalist found dead has successfully applied for her inquest to be transferred to London after claiming Greater Manchester Police mishandled an investigation into allegations she was a victim of domestic abuse.

Teresa McMahon, who worked for Granada Reports, was found unresponsive at her flat in Little Hulton, Salford, on August 3 2021. Police concluded Teresa, 43, had taken her own life.

As reported in the Manchester Evening News, in July last year, GMP refused a request by her aunt, Lorna McMahon for a criminal investigation into the death of her niece.

In March, Lorna failed in an attempt at the High Court to get a judicial review against the Independent Office for Police Conduct's conclusion that GMP's investigation into Teresa's death was reasonable and proportionate. But Mrs Justice Lang declined the request, and ordered Lorna to pay both GMP's and the IOPC's court costs.

But the UK's Chief Coroner, Her Honour Judge Alexia Dunn, has now agreed to switch Teresa's inquest to the capital from Bolton. In a letter confirming the move HHJ Dunn says: "On 3 August 2021, Teresa McMahon was found dead at her home with a ligature around her neck. A coronial investigation is underway that will eventually need to determine how Ms McMahon died. I understand that the circumstances of her death mean that suicide is one possible conclusion. However, other issues have also been raised, including that her death may have resulted from domestic abuse."

The investigation was initially conducted by the Senior Coroner of Manchester West, Timothy Brennand. However, he recused himself to avoid a perception of bias
