"Incredible!" - Huddersfield Town hero Jon Russell has message for fans after huge Cardiff win

Jon Russell was delighted to have played his part in an epic midweek win over Cardiff City on Wednesday night and believes Huddersfield Town’s current success is in part down to their work ethic.

“It’s massive, we’re grafters I think, we’re underdogs,” said the Terriers' midfielder, “they made us battle hard but we’re used to teams that make it hard and we still get through it.”

Town fell behind to Tommy Doyle’s 61st-minute goal but a late Josh Koroma equaliser and then a 96th-minute winner from Russell sent the John Smith’s Stadium into overdrive. The win sees Town in fourth place in the Championship table with 56 points, already their highest total since the 2016/17 promotion season.

Russell is keeping his feet on the ground and is still just trying to make the most of his chance in the first team. “It’s all I’ve ever wanted, I’m taking my opportunity, I just want to do my best and see what happens,” he said, “I’m just grateful to be in the position.”

Town’s unbeaten run extended to sixteen games with the win and Russell believes it’s a reward for the effort the Terriers are putting in.

“It’s massive, it gives us confidence, a massive boost, we deserve it,” said the ex-Chelsea man, “we’re grateful for how well we’re doing and how hard we’re working, we deserve it – we need to keep going.”

He did have a special message for the Town support who he described as “incredible” after his winner, “I love the fans, they’re the best fans I know, the best, unreal, so loud!

“They’re just up for it, they’re on you, it’s incredible, I just love it.”
