Ilkay Gundogan says Man City must emulate Leeds lesson vs Real Madrid

Ilkay Gundogan says Manchester City must replicate the defensive resoluteness they showed against Leeds United in their Champions League second leg against Real Madrid.

Carlo Ancelotti's side steamrolled to the Liga title on Saturday, firing four past Espanyol. Pep Guardiola afforded rest Kevin de Bruyne, naming the Belgian on the bench, and allowed a late cameo for Bernardo Silva during their 4-0 win after their seven-goal thriller against Los Blancos on Wednesday.

City are within 90 minutes of their second successive Champions League final. Last time out in the Spanish capital, the Blues frustrated Atletico Madrid and at the Bernabeu, a similar sturdy performance is needed if they want to move a step closer to breaking their European duck.

"It's normal," Gundogan said speaking about Joao Cancelo's slip in the early stages. "That's what we train for, I think the key is not to panic.

"Of course come back as quick as possible, I'm not the quickest obviously but I was able to get back and get the block. Defensively we were able to block, we defended very well, Edi did very well and not conceding a goal was very important for the next games more so maybe Madrid, it's going to be crucial."
