Ilkay Gundogan might be following Vincent Kompany after FA Cup final heroics for Man City

The reaction from the Manchester City players said it all when Ilkay Gundogan found the top corner after 13 seconds against Manchester United - pure disbelief.

City fans will have few better goal celebrations than the opener at Wembley, and they almost made as much noise when they saw a replay on the big screens a moment later. Even Pep Guardiola, who plans everything to the minute detail, couldn't have imagined a start like it.

After being pegged back before half-time by United, City came out flying after the break, and Gundogan again found the back of the net with another first-time volley from 20 yards. As he wheeled away to a second jubilant City celebration, it felt like it would be a perfect parting memory.

After all, this could have been Gundogan's final domestic appearance for City. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, and no decision to be made before that, City fans may not know if this is the last time most of them see their captain.

It is a situation reminiscent of the last time City were in the FA Cup final in 2019. Vincent Kompany had scored to effectively win the Premier League title against Leicester and then got them over the line on the final day. In the FA Cup final, Kompany conducted City to a 6-0 demolition of Watford.

Only the day after the domestic treble had been completed did Kompany announce his intention to leave, denying match-going fans a chance to properly say goodbye.

The parallels to Gundogan's situation are eerily similar. He scored the title-winning goals last season, and last month scored back-to-back braces against Leeds and Everton to earn the decisive points that meant Arsenal couldn't catch them. Now
