Ilkay Gundogan details Pep Guardiola trait that gives Man City title edge

Ilkay Gundogan says Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is “the most innovative manager” in recent history due to the successful evolution of his teams.

After lifting the Treble last season, the Blues boss is gunning for a record fourth consecutive Premier League title - a feat never achieved before. Guardiola has implemented something new each season, always keeping City one step ahead of the pace in the league.

Last term, he dealt with the exit of Joao Cancelo by playing a back-line of four centre-backs while also giving John Stones licence to roam into midfield to stylish effect.

With established stars such as Gundogan, Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Laporte leaving the Etihad this summer, there is a sense that there is a gradual changing of the guard this season as youngsters such as Phil Foden and Julian Alvarez take to the forefront.

Guardiola’s ability to manufacture systems and tactics to ensure he gets the maximum from his squad is what makes him the best in recent memory, Gundogan believes.

“If you look at the seasons we had together, there was not one season we played identically, you know? Always, little details changed,” he told City club media.

“Trying to play the same type of football for several years brings certain dangers with it. And I think having that little challenge from the manager leads to everyone being on the front foot. That’s why he’s probably the most innovative manager for more than the last decade.”
