'Idiots' - Coventry City boss provides angry response to Everton transfer speculation

Mark Robins has rubbished reports linking Everton with interest in Coventry City star striker Viktor Gyokeres.

Reports from Sweden had claimed the Premier League club have been “in talks” with the 24-year-old as they look for emergency cover following an injury to Toffees’ front man Dominic Calvert-Lewin, leaving manager Frank Lampard with just one recognised senior striker in Salomon Rondon.

Gyokeres impressed at the Sky Blues last season when he netted 17 goals and recorded a further five assists across 41 starts for Mark Robins’ side in the Championship. The striker picked up from where he left off last season scoring Coventry’s only goal of the new campaign so far in the 1-1 draw against Sunderland last month.

But asked about the speculation after his side’s 4-1 Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Bristol City, where Gyokeres was an unused sub, the manager said: “I think this is what you get in the window, idiots talking rubbish and there’s absolutely zero truth in things. So as far as I know there’s nothing in that.

“I think that people are up to no good. There are a lot of mischief makers at this time of year so we have just got to put it down to that.

“If there’s anything to tell you I’ll tell you about it but at the moment there’s absolutely zero happening.”

Robins has already commented on the possibility of City losing their talisman upfront, outlining how the Sky Blues are ‘at the mercy of predators’ regarding his future. Speaking after the opening match against Sunderland, he said: “Viktor is really settled but you are always at the mercy of predators.
