‘Icing on the cake’ – Journalist namedrops superstar Spurs could sign if there's 'extra money'

Memphis Depay could be the ‘icing on the cake’ for Tottenham Hotspur this summer, but there are bigger priorities to sign beforehand, according to Daily Mail journalist Sami Mokbel. 

Spurs have stormed into the summer transfer window with the acquisitions of the likes of Richarlison, Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma, and Fraser Forster and have recently set their sights on Djed Spence from Middlesbrough.

However, one player who could be an interesting signing for the North London outfit is Memphis Depay, who has recently been linked with a move to the club this summer. Mokbel recently claimed that while they have more important signings to make, the Dutchman could be the icing on the cake if they can get a deal done.

He said on the Last Word on Spurs podcast, “It’s not one that I know about, that doesn’t mean the links today aren’t genuine, but I think Tottenham and Conte have certainly got bigger priorities at the moment in terms of strengthening their squad.

“Maybe if there is a little bit of extra money to spend towards the end of the window and someone like Depay is available that could be icing on the cake for Tottenham’s window for sure.” (29:35)

While signing Depay would improve their attack, it has been reported the club want to bring in a wing-back on both the left and right, a new world-class centre-back and midfielders as Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, and Harry Winks are linked with moves away from the club.

If they can bring these players in and have money left over to bring in Depay, he would be a great addition to the depth for this Spurs side. Last season he played well at Barcelona with 12 goals and two assists across in La Liga while averaging 2.2 shots, 1.6 key passes,
