Ian Wright critical over Arsenal star for failing to take his chance against Liverpool

Ian Wright has pinpointed Alisson Becker’s save to deny Martin Odegaard as the moment that cost Arsenal against Liverpool.

The Gunners stood toe-to-toe with Jurgen Klopp’s side in the first-half at the Emirates on Wednesday night but were undone by two goals in the space of eight minutes in the second period.

Before those goals from Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino however, Arsenal were presented with a golden chance to take the lead when Thiago Alcantara’s errant back pass found its way to Alexandre Lacazette whose presence drew Alisson out of his goal.

The Frenchman kept the ball before sliding into the path of Odegaard who shot for goal. Almost 12 yards out from his line, Alisson brilliantly palmed the ball over the bar.

That effort was just one of two Mikel Arteta’s side managed on target despite plenty of promise against Liverpool.

And Arsenal legend Wright was left to rue the missed chance from Odegaard, believing the Dane showed a lack of composure needed to punish the visitors.

‘It was the moment they had to take,’ Wright told Premier League Productions.

‘Lacazette has done very well to get it and hold it up for Martin Odegaard.

‘He has just blasted it really, can he be a bit more composed, maybe slot it somewhere, take a touch and slot it around to the right?

‘He just smashes his foot through it.

‘To be honest, you have got to give credit on the save but those chances in those moments you have to take.’
