Ian Burchnall issues 'fantastic' Notts County verdict as promotion charge continues

Notts County head coach Ian Burchnall hailed a "great performance" as the Magpies' promotion charge continued with victory over Boreham Wood.

Matt Palmer's first-half strike was enough to bank all three points for the Magpies who were sensational in the opening 45 minutes. But despite their dominance and swashbuckling approach play, they couldn't find the second goal that would have reflected their superiority.

Luke Garrard's side failed to seriously test goalkeeper Sam Slocombe in the second half as Ruben Rodrigues and Alex Lacey both went close.

Notts saw the game out comfortably to record all three points which earned them back to back victories after beating Dagenham at the weekend. And head coach Burchnall was pleased with the performance as they moved up to sixth in the National League table.

"They worked unbelievably well and it was a great performance in two different aspects," he said. "In the first half, the football we played was sensational. The patterns, the movement and the chances we created were fantastic to watch.

"In the second half I thought we started it well but towards the end, we got caught into going long and played a little bit into their hands.

"But we restricted them to very little through really good defending and we still created a lot at the other end. It was a well-measured performance.

"Our off-ball work was brilliant and I thought the back three were immense. We were playing a really good team who are very hard to break down. But we created a lot of chances against one the best-organised teams in the league."
