'I won't pay for my wife to come on holiday – I don't care if people say I'm cruel'

Many of us like to think our nearest and dearest would help us out if we're struggling with money.

But one woman was left shocked when her husband refused to pay for her $1,000 (£778) plane ticket to Europe with his family, even though he could afford it.

Some people criticised the man, saying he was "cruel", but he claimed his wife was "horrible with money" and said he was trying to teach her not to be so irresponsible. He said she isn't paid much compared to him, so when they pooled their money after getting married, she "went crazy" spending whatever she fancied.

"I had many conversations with her over it and even tried to get her to take a money financial class", he explained. But unfortunately, her financial situation got "worse and worse" and he learned that she was in "bad credit card debt", so said she either sort it out or they'd have to divorce.

He shared on Reddit's 'Am I The A**hole' forum: "To her credit, she took it seriously and she is fixing her credit card debt. We have separate money and I pay for the bills while her only worry is to buy groceries."

Her husband then explained his family has a big holiday coming up and "everyone is invited". He wrote: "The trip is to Europe and plane tickets are going to cost 1000+. My parents are going to pay for the resort so the only thing that needs to be paid is the plane ticket and fun money for the trip.
