I was in Saipan for Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy bust-up – one scared me more than the other

Clinton Morrison says ex-Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy was more intimidating than Manchester United legend Roy Keane.

Morrison had a front-row seat for Keane's infamous bust-up with McCarthy in Saipan ahead of the 2002 World Cup which threatened to derail Ireland's campaign before it even began. Keane, who was captain at the time, was sent home after raging about the poor quality of Ireland's training facilities and launching a foul-mouthed tirade at the coaching staff, including an alleged outburst towards McCarthy.

But despite Keane's fearsome reputation, Morrison suggested that McCarthy was the scarier of the two, adding that he was the one manager he got nervous around. "He's got that big Yorkshire accent and he's a big guy who you won't really want to get on the wrong side of... he was the only one I was genuinely scared of," Morrison told the Mirror via Betway.

Last month, it emerged that the Saipan controversy was being turned into a movie, titled 'Saipan', with Eanna Hardwicke playing Keane and Steve 'Alan Partridge' Coogan as McCarthy. When asked what Coogan had to do in order to nail the role, Morrison replied: "I think it's hard to play Mick McCarthy... but if I'm scared of Mick [in the film] then I'd say [Coogan] will have done a pretty good job."
