Robert Lewandowski has revealed he agreed to sign for Manchester United in 2012, only for Borussia Dortmund to refuse to sanction the transfer.
The Polish striker, who has since become one of the greatest strikers of his generation, had just enjoyed a breakout season at Dortmund in 2011/12 when Sir Alex Ferguson called and told him he wanted to bring him to Old Trafford.
Lewandowski had netted 30 goals in 47 games in that campaign and was still two years away from his move to Bayern Munich, but Ferguson wanted to sign the striker who turned 22 in that summer to lead his attack.

Asked if he was nervous about the call, Lewandowski said: "Oh, very. And, you know, he's going to speak easy English, yeah? And he called, Hello, my name is Robert Lewandowski. Yeah, hi, hi….You know, this Scottish accent!
