I rejected Manchester United and got relegated - but funny stories like this happen

Over the years, Manchester United have not been immune to taking a Dane under their wing.

Jesper Olsen made north of 150 appearances for the club between 1984 and 1988, Peter Schmeichel played an undisputed role in the 1999 Treble and Rasmus Hojlund was the latest to come aboard last August. United have a large following within the Scandinavian region and Denmark could be described as a central hub.

Despite the undisputed potential of Hojlund, it will take something special for him or indeed anyone else to dislodge Schmeichel as United's most famous Dane. The legendary goalkeeper, who was often described as the Great Dane, won 15 major trophies during his Old Trafford career.

He was one of the greatest goalkeepers of his generation and will go down in history as one of the all-time greats. His departure in 1999, which saw him join Sporting Lisbon, marked the beginning of United's search for a replacement shot-stopper, and they went through a handful before Edwin van der Sar was established as the club's No.1 after arriving from Fulham in 2005.

The Premier League, however, has been invaded by Danish talent aplenty over the years, including Schmeichel's son, Kasper, who famously won the Premier League with Leicester City in 2016. Others include United's very own Christian Eriksen, who has also played for Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur, ex-Liverpool centre-back Daniel Agger and former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner. Perhaps one of the lesser remembered figures, however, is former Aston Villa and Stoke City goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen.
