'I really don't' - Martin Keown gives brutal verdict on Leicester City season after Roma loss

Former Leicester City defender Martin Keown does not think the club have had a "good season" following their Europa Conference League exit.

Keown has been reflecting on the Foxes' 2021-22 campaign after their semi-final defeat to Roma on Thursday night. Brendan Rodgers' men were beaten 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico as Jose Mourinho's side went through to the final 2-1 on aggregate.

The competition had represented Leicester's best and probably only remaining chance of qualifying for Europe next season. They are currently 11th in the Premier League table with five matches to go - 10 points behind West Ham in seventh place.

City have finished fifth in each of the past two seasons, just missing out on a Champions League spot both times. And of course, last term saw them win the FA Cup for the first time in the the club's history.

This season, Leicester have had to deal with a string of injury problems while juggling a gruelling European scheduled - first in the Europa League and then, after narrowly failing to qualify from the group stage, the Conference League.

It has certainly been an interesting campaign, with some memorable away days for the fans, and former City striker Emile Heskey reckons it is a "huge" achievement for the club to reach a semi-final of a European competition, albeit a brand new one.

Keown, though, does not agree. The 55-year-old, who also played for Arsenal, Everton and Aston Villa, told BT Sport: "We talked a little bit about Brendan and it may sound like we're being critical. I think this will have whetted his appetite but he's going to have to wait a little while to get back into the big business in Europe.
