‘I prefer to speak about the positive things in football’ - Eric Cantona refuses to discuss Manchester United takeover

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona admitted he would rather discuss Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola rather than the ongoing takeover at his former club.

The process to sell United has been long and drawn out. Back in November, the Glazers announced they were looking at options for investment in the Reds which included the prospect of selling the club.

Three rounds of bidding followed with Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al-Thani and Sir Jim Ratcliffe coming out as the two leading candidates. Reports had suggested the latter man was the favourite in the bidding process.

However, this has been met with scepticism from some United fans especially after the INEOS owner's other football team OGC Nice was plunged into chaos this season as fans boycotted matches due to the lack of direction for the club. Meanwhile, the Reds continue to wait for potential news on the takeover.

When asked about his thoughts on the takeover, Cantona told The Guardian he would prefer to avoid those questions. "Don’t speak about that," he said.

"No. I prefer to speak to you about [Pep] Guardiola, the positive things in football, than to speak about this kind of thing. It’s not a day for it today."

Cantona's beloved United will come up against Guardiola on Saturday when they face each other in the FA Cup final. The Reds are aiming for their first domestic cup double while simultaneously preventing City from winning the treble for the first time in their history.

Erik ten Hag will be without Cantona's fellow countryman Anthony Martial this weekend after the forward picked up a hamstring injury.
