I nearly died after routine trip to the dentist turned into a bloodbath – now I'm Scottish football's joint top scorer

Blood filled the sink and covered the floor.

When his wife opened the door the bathroom resembled a murder scene. And as Scottish football’s joint-top scorer was driven to hospital he thought he was going to die. A routine trip to the dentist turned into a nightmare for Alan Trouten and his family.

He went for a filling and ended up losing five PINTS of blood and fearing for his life. After having his gums stitched, Trouten was afraid to go to sleep in case he didn’t wake up. But the 39-year-old striker survived. And just a few months after his horrendous oral ordeal he’s banging goals in again for East Fife.

That fateful day, October 28, will live with Trouten forever. When a dentist nicked the inside of his mouth with a sharp object, he thought nothing of it. But fast forward a few hours – and with blood flowing like a tap – he sat in the passenger seat of a car trying to stay alive.

In an exclusive interview with Record Sport, he relived the whole episode and painted the picture of a horror movie at the Trouten household. He said: “Whenever I go to the dentist, it’s always a double appointment with my seven-year-old daughter Lucy. She was going for a check-up and I had to get a filling.

“I was nearly done and just as the dentist had a utensil on my tooth Lucy moved off her seat. The dentist’s eyes went off me for a second towards her so the utensil came off my tooth and nicked the inside of my gum.

“It just felt like a nip. But with her tone of voice, I knew it was pretty bad. Lying back on the chair, I couldn’t see the amount of blood I was losing. She kept putting pieces of gauze in and pulling them out covered in blood.
