'I'm fighting against pro-lifers at Manchester Uni. This is the hate I've got'

A student campaigning against the setting up of a Pro-Life group at the University of Manchester has spoken out about the online abuse that she and others have received.

Manchester Pro-Life Society launched at the university's students' union on January 11 saying 'they aim to support the dignity of every human life from conception'.

The founding of the society triggered a row on campus, with some students blasting the group as 'abhorrent' and accusing the Students' Union of 'endorsing societies that aim to abolish' rights.

The Students Union responded saying it can’t block a society from forming because of their beliefs if they are lawful, as a petition to dissolve the society, which to date has attracted over 19,000 signatures, was put on Change.org.

The anonymously posted petition opened with the statement: "I am a concerned student at the University of Manchester, deeply troubled by the potential harm that could be caused by our university's Pro-Life Society. The existence of this society adds to an already prevalent stigma surrounding abortion, a legal right in our country. Women at our university should not have to face additional pressure or judgement on such personal matters."

Amid the row, Hannah Morton, 24, started an Instagram page - Stop Manchester Pro-Life - attracting 1,800 followers.

It's led to her and friends getting messages accusing them of being part of a 'pro genocide movement' and claiming 'abortion isn't simply a woman not wanting a child, it's murder'.
