Manchester United's forgotten man is proving critics wrong - but for all the wrong reasons

Eintracht Frankfurt will reportedly not trigger their £8.5million option to sign Donny van de Beek this summer with the midfielder looking set to return to Old Trafford.

The Dutchman, 26, joined the Bundesliga side on loan in January having played just two minutes in the Premier League for Manchester United this season prior to his move.

His departure in January was seen as an opportunity for the Dutch midfielder to revive his career after struggling to make an impact at Old Trafford following his transfer from Ajax.

While the German outfit were aware that Van de Beek may not arrive in peak condition, they were optimistic they could get the best out of the player. However, the midfielder's performances have failed to impress manager Dino Toppmoller.

The uncertainty surrounding Van de Beek's future adds further uncertainty to United's transfer plans. While United were blamed for not having a plan for Van de Beek when they signed him, this is the second failed loan spell he has had after only making seven appearances during his time on loan at Everton.

No, United are not blameless in the Van de Beek saga. Signing a player for £40m and barely offering him a chance is hardly good business, but perhaps the player is equally at fault for his failed United move. Granted, he hasn't moved to Everton or Frankfurt in top condition thanks to his lack of minutes at United, but he's yet to show United that they made a mistake in not handing him more opportunities.
